Position Title: Homeless Health Service Aboriginal Health Worker

Employment Type: Maximum Term, Full-Time

Hours per week: 38 hours per week (occasional early starts as required)

Position Grade: Aboriginal Health Education Officer Non-Graduate

Salary: $54,383.00 - $80,097.00 AUD Annual

Position Summary:

A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) – non-graduate role, to engage with and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Working within a harm minimisation strengths-based framework, the AHW will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing or at risk of homelessness to access health services of their choice. The AHW will work closely with the Homeless Health Service staff in an outreach capacity to ensure the provision of culturally respectful and safe care and will have an important role in advocacy on behalf of their clients. The AHW will develop and maintain effective networks with both internal and external stakeholders and will assist in the cultural development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion and health education initiatives undertaken by the Homeless Health Service.

The position is full-time, working 8am – 4:30pm weekdays with occasional early starts. Maximum-term up to 30/10/2021 with the possibility of extending the contract.

Selection Criteria

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia.
  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  • Demonstrated awareness of the impact that homelessness has on the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Demonstrated awareness of the issues that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may face when accessing health services and the ability to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait people experiencing homelessness to access health services of their choice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within the interdisciplinary team and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with email and an electronic patient record system
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Current Drivers Licence.
