Feros Care is proud to partner with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to deliver Local Area Coordination services in the Mackay region.

The role

The primary focus of this role is to create cultural safety for participants and community and be the conduit between Feros Care, the NDIS, and local community. The position is responsible for empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability, their families, community, and carers to build, pursue and fulfill their goals and aspirations, exercise choice and control while engaging with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The position supports community in helping identify, implement plans and create more visible pathways to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants and non-participants of the NDIS can access support outside of the Scheme by working collaboratively with local communities and mainstream services to raise awareness and become more inclusive of the needs of people with disability.

This position has been created to improve the under-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the aged care and disability sectors and is an equal opportunity measure under section 105 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

What will I be responsible for?

  • Assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families, carers and broader communities to access relevant information about the NDIS and assist with enquiries about the scheme
  • Provide guidance and support to internal employees who are assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participates, families, carers and the broader communities.
  • Assisting participants to develop a plan which includes their goals, needs and wishes
  • As a subject matter expert, work collaboratively with regional communities, positively representing Feros Care to strengthen capabilities and adopt sustainable capacity building and stakeholder engagement activities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and create positive partnerships with external stakeholders in the wider community to build a more inclusive community to facilitate effective access and appropriate referral to a diverse range of service providers

About you

  • Identify as Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander
  • Have relevant work experience, lived experience, or hold a relevant qualification in disability, community services or other health related discipline
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures
  • Positive and respectful communicator with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience or sound understanding of person-centred strengths-based planning andreview
  • Demonstrated experience or sound understanding of planning, implementing and evaluating community engagement events with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Confident and everyday user of technology and the internet
  • Current unrestricted drivers licence
  • Available to attend initial training and orientation for first 4 weeks of employment

The selection process

To find the best possible LACs for our team, we have a thorough recruitment process in which you will need to go through in order to become a successful LAC. The first step is completing an online application. This includes several pre-screening questions. Some questions require detailed responses, explaining your previous experience and skills. These questions are provided below to assist you in preparing your application prior to submission.

  • Tell us about a time when you have worked with a person with disability, their family and carer where you had to think creatively about positive initiatives for the participant or client.
  • Tell us how you have used strengths-based planning principals to build a plan and coordinate services for a participant or client.
  • Please provide an example of when you have worked with a community to successfully build capacity and awareness of a program or initiative.

When successful, you will be required to undertake a national police check and provide evidence of your right to work in Australia.
