About the Department

St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health, mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.

About the Role

The position is to provide excellence in patient care using best practice, clinical guidelines, advanced medical assessment, treatment planning and health monitoring. Particular clinical areas for medical oversight by the Consultant Physician include (but are not limited to):

  • Cellulitis
  • Prescription of long-term antibiotics
  • Medication rationalisation/poly-pharmacy
  • Wound management
  • Advance care planning
  • End of life and palliative care
  • Day chemotherapy (patients have begun and require continuing treatment)
  • Renal dialysis (patients have begun and require continuing treatment)
  • Cardiac monitoring and/or telemetry,
  • Telehealth
  • Physical Rehabilitation
  • Medical monitoring post-surgery and general respiratory complaints/infection
  • Addressing medication management issues and planning for discharge
  • Participation in multidisciplinary meetings to support the wider health care team in the development of treatment goals
  • Expanding the scope of practice/skill development for Registered Nurses (advanced wound care, cardiac monitoring, IV cannulation).

The classification for this position will range between a HN16-HN41, depending on hours and experience ($144.10- $170.00 hourly rate, up to a year 6 specialist)

You have a comprehensive understanding of the health needs for prisoner populations, including knowledge of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and homelessness. You possess attributes including resilience, integrity and the ability to think on your feet.


  • Undertake comprehensive specialist medical assessments and plan appropriate investigation and treatment for patients in correctional health service.
  • Provide consultative services to patients attending outpatient health services, as requested.
  • Provide medical assessment and support, at nursing staff request, for urgent patient care in the event of a Code Black situation.
  • Ensure medical care is provided in line with policies and procedures required
  • Provide clinical leadership, mentoring and support the professional development of the medical workforce including leading and/or participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, ward rounds and other clinical management meetings for team based care planning.
  • Monitor and maintain all aspects of confidentiality in relation to clinical care.
  • Establish and maintain effective liaison, relationships and networking within and across a broad range of key stakeholders

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Registration with APHRA
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
  • Advanced clinical skills within speciality of General Medicine and/or Aged Care
  • Evidence of ongoing CME participation
  • Leadership qualities with demonstrated ability to direct, enthuse, motivate, support and encourage a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
