Post Graduate Fellow

Department: Anatomical Pathology and Molecular Pathology

Employment Type: 9 months Fixed Term 0.8FTE


Position Summary:

This exciting new position is a recognition of the increasing importance of molecular pathology to diagnostic surgical pathology practice. The Post Graduate Fellow in Molecular Pathology will be given ample opportunity to integrate routine reporting with training in solid tumour molecular pathology reporting. Based within a tertiary referral teaching hospital with strong translational research networks, this unique training opportunity provides fellows with 50% protected time to develop and complete a research project in molecular pathology, with 50% spent on routine reporting of surgical pathology, cytopathology and post-mortems.

Selection Criteria:

  • Possess, or be eligible to possess, registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • Possess Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) or equivalent as provided for in the Post Graduate Fellow, The NSW (Non-Declared) Affiliated Health Organization’s Staff Specialist Agreement.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of practice across a broad range of Anatomical Pathology with a willingness to continue to develop experience across this range, and to develop expertise in specific areas reported in the Department as established through discussion and agreement with the Director in consultation with the Department’s pathologists.

  • Experience in reporting FISH and next generation sequencing is preferred.

  • Experience in reporting surgical and cytopathology cases related to heart/lung, bone marrow and renal transplant programs is preferred.

  • Demonstrated suitable accreditation and experience in performing and reporting postmortems.

  • Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience and commitment to the implementation of best practice and clinical service innovation.

  • Demonstrate ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.

  • Demonstrate commitment to teaching at speciality registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels.

  • Commitment to molecular pathology training plan, including but not be limited to reporting FISH and NGS, with the aim of meeting the initial requirements of the RCPA Molecular Training Program.

  • Commitment to a molecular pathology research project, developed in consultation with the molecular pathologists in the Department, with the aim to publish findings in peer reviewed professional journals.

  • Demonstrate the provision of a patient focused, comprehensive, high quality and cost effective clinical service with knowledge and commitment to the implementation of best practice and clinical service innovation.

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
