Medical Laboratory Scientist



  • Research group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI)

  • VIDRL (Victorian Department of Infectious Diseases) based at the Doherty Institute

  • Full Time, Fixed Term position, working 80 hours per fortnight for 12 months

Your new team



The primary focus of this position is to support ongoing research activities at the Centre investigating the susceptibility of influenza viruses to antiviral drugs and assessing the fitness of influenza viruses. The successful applicant will work closely with a group scientists analysing respiratory viruses especially influenza using various techniques and animal models.



Your success in this role, will be in your ability to



  • To support the Centre’s research activities on influenza and other respiratory viruses

  • To participate in and run experimental animal models of influenza

  • Perform cell culture experience and virus isolation

  • Perform gene sequencing using Sanger and NGS platforms

  • Perform real time RT-PCR assays

  • Perform standard molecular and virological techniques as required

  • To assist in the development and testing of new methods

  • Interact with Centre staff on findings from these studies


Your Contribution



  • Degree in microbiology/immunology (or similar discipline) and have laboratory experience (2 years minimum, preferably in the virological/microbiological/or immunological disciplines)

  • Experience working with animal models of disease

  • Experienced in animal handling and animal experimentation

  • Experienced in cell culture experience and virus isolation

  • Experienced in basic virological methods e.g. TCID50, plaquing

  • Experienced in basic molecular techniques cloning, plasmid preparation, transfection etc

  • Able to write scientifically and to prepare SOP’s

  • Able to work in a NATA environment with a high degree of quality control
