Medical Laboratory Scientist

  •  We are looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join the Serology group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for reference and research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI), VIDRL
  •  Full Time, Fixed Term (Maternity leave) position, working 80 hours per fortnight including ADO
  • Based at The Doherty Institute

Your new team

The primary focus of this position is to support isolation and serological characterisation of influenza viruses received at the WHOCCRRI. The successful applicant will work closely with a group scientists analysing influenza and possibly other respiratory viruses.

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

  • University BSc degree inmicrobiology/immunology (or similar discipline) and have some laboratory experience (2 years minimum), preferably in the virological/microbiological/or immunological disciplines
  • To support the Centre’s surveillance activities on influenza and other respiratory viruses
  • To characterise influenza and other respiratory viruses using a variety of techniques
  • To assist in the development and testing of new methods
  • To develop seed viruses for influenza vaccines
  • To interact with Centre staff on findings from these studies

Your Contribution

  • Experienced in cell culture experience and virus isolation
  • Able to perform classical virological techniques such as TCID50, plaquing, HA titrations
  • Experienced in real time PCR assays
  • Able to write scientifically to prepare SOP’s
  • Contribute effectively as a team member
  • Accurately record experimental data into both hard and soft copy
  • Work in a NATA environment with a high degree of quality control
  • Well organised and self-motivate
  • Experience in basic molecular biology techniques such as cloning or sequencing capabilities would be beneficial.
