The Townsville Hospital and Health Service is the largest tertiary health service in northern Australia; we are responsible for the delivery of healthcare services, education and research within a region covering over 149,500km with a population of approximately 250,000 people.

We cover the continuum of healthcare services from advanced, highly specialised, tertiary-level healthcare at the main hospital to secondary and primary-level hospital and community healthcare across 20 facilities. The main facility is located adjacent to one of Queensland’s leading tertiary institutions, James Cook University.

This position will deliver high level social work services, within a multidisciplinary working partnership with other health professionals to Emergency Department patients to optimise patient and/or family/carer psychosocial outcomes and to maximise benefits from the health care services. The position provides a reference point on complex psychosocial issues for medical, nursing and allied health staff within the emergency department over a 7 day, extended hours roster. 

The position is located in the Emergency Department (ED) with the multi-disciplinary Allied Health team and provides clinical social work services within ED.

Generous remuneration package value up to $92,767 p.a. comprising salary range of $75,558 to $81,306 p.a. (HP4), 17.5% leave loading, 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation. We are seeking a highly dynamic, passionate social worker who can demonstrate the following:

  • A tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in social work that provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  • Additional experience and/or post graduate qualifications in trauma and critical care will be highly regarded.
  • High level knowledge of social work practice theories and social legislation in a health care setting, particularly relating to trauma and critical care, end-of-life, advanced care planning, domestic violence, sexual assault, child protection, elder abuse, guardianship, administrative issues and residential (adult and aged) care.
  • Ability to independently provide social work assessments and interventions in complex situations without access to clinical practice supervision on a day to day basis.
  • Ability to problem-solve and exercise risk management where customer risk is identified, and to meet the complex psychosocial needs of consumers.
