The Position

Whyalla is one of South Australia’s largest rural towns boasting high-quality services, schooling, and recreational facilities. Working with a team of supportive staff, the successful candidate will be a crucial member of the primary health care team within the practice. The successful applicant will provide medical services to the Whyalla Hospital and Health Services, and participate in the emergency on-call roster.

The Practice

The Medical Clinic provides high-quality community-based healthcare services to the Whyalla community and rural community of Iron Knob.

The practice provides services in antenatal obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, occupational health, and minor surgery. GPs at the practice provides medical services to the local hospital and its emergency services through a shared roster and provide care to residents of three nursing homes as well as Amaroo Lodge Hostel. GPs at the practice are supported by a dedicated team of administrative, nursing and allied health professionals.

The Community

Whyalla is located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula, 395km north of Adelaide on the Spencer Gulf, 77km south of Port Augusta. The town has a smelting plant that produces around 1.2 million tonnes of raw steel annually. The town produces finished steel products for the construction and rail industries and is the only rail manufacturer in Australia. Other industry includes grain, sheep and cattle farming.

Whyalla is the third-largest city in South Australia with a population of 22,000, including 5,800 families with children 15 years and under. The town has an Indigenous population of approximately 4% and at least 25% of the population were born overseas; the majority of whom have come from Europe.
