Family / Carer Peer Support Worker (PSW)

  • We are excited to be recruiting to our established peer support workgroup at Sunshine Adult Acute Psychiatric Unit (SAAPU)

  • Permanent part time Family / Carer Peer Support Worker (PSW) position - 2 days a week (4 days a fortnight)

  • Standard business hours (Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 5.00pm) flexible upon commencement

Your new team

  • The PSW and the Peer Coordinator work alongside the broader interdisciplinary team (occupational therapists, social workers, nurses, doctors, allied health assistants)

  • We have a number of Consumer and Family / Carer PSW led group activities alongside our OT

  • A dynamic work group of PSW, Peer Coordinators and clinical staff

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

  • Provide peer support and information to families of consumers in an adult acute inpatient unit

  • Focus on support for families / carers during the consumers admission and for a small number for a short period following discharge from the acute inpatient unit to a range of other supports in the community.

  • Be active collaborators in developing, reviewing and providing information resources for consumers and their families and carers.

Your Contribution

  • A lived / living experience as a family member / carer for a consumer who experiences mental ill-health and treatment within a mental health service

  • Ability to draw on your own lived / living experience in working alongside families / carers of consumers

  • Awareness of, and commitment to, your wellbeing and self-care as it relates to your work

  • Strong interpersonal skills 

  • Empathic and compassionate approach 

  • Understanding of peer support and recovery principles

  • Ability to work independently in an organised manner and while also taking direction for daily activities where required
