About Department
St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health, mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.

About the Role

The Grade 3 Occupational Therapist is responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of a high quality occupational therapy services to inpatients at St Johns unit, Port Philip Prison. The role reports directly to the Occupational Therapy Manager at SVHM, and has the support of not only the allied health team at Port Phillip Prison, but also the support and comradery of the occupational therapy team at SVHM. The role also requires leadership skills to oversee the operations of the occupational therapy service and the Grade 2 Correctional Health Occupational Therapist based at the Prison.

Classifications for this position will range from Occupational Therapist Grade 3 VG3 - VG6 ($93,80- $107,200 per annum).

You are a motivated, engaging, and compassionate person who is looking to make a difference in the lives of those who are vulnerable. An understanding of the health needs for prisoner populations, including knowledge of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and homelessness is advantageous but not essential. You are a team player and a respectful and professional person who demonstrates a high level of moral values, interpersonal and influencing skills and strives to deliver consistency in all that you do. You possess attributes including resilience, integrity and the ability to think on your feet.


  • Provide optimal Occupational Therapy clinical management to all patients through the continuum of care by assessment, treatment, re-evaluation, documentation, team liaison and effective discharge planning.
  • Undertake a clinical caseload and provide a clinically relevant service based on current evidence based practice and best practice principles.
  • Master a working understanding of the health and correctional health service
  • Establish and maintain strategic links and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders appropriate to this senior role.
  • Provision of and participation in supervision of staff as required, including assisting to manage clinical loads and roster and leave in consultation with the occupational therapy manager
  • Demonstrate management skills and provide consultation on complex professional issues within the department.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Relevant experience as an Occupational Therapist in a clinical in-patient setting
  • A keen interest & working knowledge of occupational therapy intervention to patients in the acute, aged care and rehabilitation settings.
  • Post Graduate or Higher Qualifications or an intent to commence in a relevant professional area are highly advantageous to this role, but not essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience as a team leader in a similar setting.
