The Coding Unit at Prince of Wales is a supportive team who provides a high quality and specialised coding service for Prince of Wales, Royal Hospital and Sydney Hospital Sydney Eye Hospital. The casemix is complex and ranges across medical, surgical, aged care and mental health services.

The Clinical Coder Trainee is required to provide accurate and timely classification of inpatient episodes utilising the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Eleventh Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) and the Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI) for the Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH), Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) (all co-located at Randwick) as well as Sydney Hospital &Sydney Eye Hospital (SHSEH) which is located as Macquarie Street, Sydney CBD.

This role is for trainee clinical coders who are seeking coding experience in a major teaching hospital. Intensive training will be provided by experienced Coding Educators, thus training cost agreements apply (see attachment enclosed for further details).

Selection Criteria: * Completion of a relevant Clinical Coding course (ICD 10 AM) as an entry level coder.

  • Pre requisite proficiency in medical terminology
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and proven attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience in using computerised systems and Microsoft software
  • Excellent communication skills including accurate spelling, good comprehension, confidence in the spoken word and ability to deal confidently and courteously with people at all levels
  • Good organisational skills including the ability to ensure that work is completed in a timely manner for coding timelines including management of competing priorities.
  • Capacity to work independently under broad supervision and to undertake a diverse range of tasks as an effective member of a team
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing education and contribute to group discussions where required.
