Associate Nurse Unit Manager



  • Full, Permanent position –80 hours per fortnight

  • Develop your clinical skills in an acute mental health in-patient unit

  • Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary teams

Your new team



Based at John Cade Acute Adult Psychiatry Ward at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, City Campus, this position offers experience as a leader within the clinical team, further educational and on-going training support to enable the Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) to further develop their clinical skills for work in an acute mental health in-patient unit.



Your success in this role, will be in your ability to



  • Deliver holistic, recovery focussed care to consumers, carers, and families

  • Deliver high standards of consumer care, which is not limited to mental health and will holistically include the consumers spiritual, cultural and physical health needs

  • Demonstrate and contribute to medication safety, including safe medication administration

  • Advocate for consumers and drive a high standards of care

  • Preceptorship and mentoring of undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate nurses

  • Co-ordinate the treatment and care of consumers on a shift-by-shift basis, and ensure care is delivered in accordance with relevant professional, area mental health service, and Melbourne Health values.

  • The ANUM is a member of the multidisciplinary team who works closely with patients and their families to achieve positive treatment outcomes for individuals who have experienced serious mental illness.


Your Contribution



  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)

  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to ensuring patients understand and maintain the best possible physical health

  • Present an understanding of the most effective delivery of Evidence-Based Practice

  • Sound knowledge of, and demonstrated skills in, risk assessment, mental state assessment, and person-centred care planning

  • Capacity to deliver acute mental health nursing care from a Strengths-Based, Recovery-Focused framework

  • The ANUM will also be required to rotate into the Creating Safety Nurse role, which works intensively with nursing staff focusing on reducing restrictive interventions, Safewards, the management of clinical aggression, and supporting staff safety and wellbeing.
