Position Purpose

  • Play an integral role in coordinating operational requirements of the workers’ compensation process and will play a key role in formulating strategy and achieving deliverables for the benefit of injured workers and Austin Health.

  • Coordinate intervention initiatives to ensure injury management practices are proactively managed to assist with staff safety and wellbeing.

  • Be responsible for developing and implementing injury management strategies and practices that promote a timely return to work for injured workers.

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to coach, develop and up-skill managers in the management of workplace injuries and in their understanding of claims administration and return to work.

  • Focus on setting strategies and providing direction and advice to management and injured workers to achieve positive outcomes.

  • Coordinate the provision of a high quality workers’ compensation and return to work function that ensures Austin Health meets all regulatory requirements whilst maximizing the gains in staff health, wellbeing and safety.

Role Specific:

  • Claims administration including;

    • processing weekly compensation payments

    • processing claims paperwork and coordinating lodgment of claims to agent insurer

    • developing and presenting statistical reports and analysis, where required

    • scheduling required meetings with injured workers, managers and relevant Directors

    • utilising our claims/injury management database to process and manage injuries and compensation claims

  • Maintain a strong relationship with Austin Health’s agent insurer·

  • Manage a caseload to ensure optimal return to work outcomes, adopting early intervention practices for injured or ill workers

  • Work in collaboration with the Health, Safety & Wellness team to provide a professional, integrated and responsive service for Austin Health

  • Working closely with line managers and supervisors to ensure optimum opportunity for injured staff to remain or return to work as soon as practicable following illness/injury·

  • Seek support and work closely with the wider People & Culture Team, including the Employee Relations and HR Consulting, Payroll Services and HR Information Management Systems

  • Liaise closely with treating medical practitioners and rehabilitation providers, particularly in completing return to work functions and encourage participation in return to work

  • Represent Austin Health at the Accident Compensation Conciliation Service (ACCS), advocating on behalf of the organisation in consultation with the authorised insurer representative·Build and manage key stakeholder relationships by establishing rapport, credibility and trust

  • Contribute to the Health, Safety & Wellness department profile for professional delivery of services and assist to maintain a team approach

  • Facilitate coaching or training where required, of line managers/supervisors as to their responsibilities and Austin Health’s management approach with regards to injury management, claims management and RTW processes

  • Represent Austin Health at external forums, including industry learning events or other functions as required

  • Develop/review policies and procedures to ensure Austin Health meets statutory and legal requirements in relation to the Accident Compensation legislation

    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, contributing positively to achievement of team objectives

    • Experience working with staff at all levels and adapting your approach to meet that of varying audiences

    • High level interpersonal and influencing skills, including the ability to foster effective working relationships with line managers and gain co-operation in the development and implementation of processes &/or projects

    • Confidence and capability in having a difficult conversation whilst maintaining respect and integrity with all involved

    • High level computer skills (eg. word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)

Desirable but not essential:

  • An understanding of information technology systems relevant to the functioning of the position, including riskman, chris21, kronos and quickclaim

  • Coaching and/or mediation skills and ability to provide advocacy on behalf of Austin Health in specific circumstances

  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety, HR Management, Allied Health, Nursing or other appropriate discipline/s

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Workcover legislation, standards and processes

  • Certificate IV in Training & Assessment
