Role: Senior Public Health Officer (until 31 December 2021)

Position Summary:

This Senior Public Health Officer position will utilise your skills in relation to the investigation, surveillance, management, and control of COVID-19. This job offers an excellent opportunity for those wishing to further build in their existing experience and skills in public health.

The role requires shift work and may require occasional weekend work. For health and safety reasons, successful candidates may be requested to cease external clinical duties for the duration of their tenure in the role.


  • Ensure accurate and timely review of wastewater surveillance sampling requests, laboratory results and case-location and other data in the wastewater surveillance data management and reporting systems to support surveillance and control objectives.
  • Liaise with laboratory and sampling service providers and water utilities to plan and coordinate wastewater surveillance activities including changes in sampling locations, sampling schedules and follow-up and resolution of any data queries.
  • Participate in the on-call roster to receive laboratory reports with wastewater detections and related review, reporting and escalation for public health actions.
  • Prepare, review and present written and verbal reports in relation to wastewater surveillance detections to key stakeholders as per program SOPs and update with additional information through completion.
  • Prepare, review and update as need wastewater surveillance SOPs to guide standardized efficient and effective work processes.
  • Prepare, review and present written and verbal reports, including preparation of briefing material for senior management in relation to wastewater surveillance notifications and investigations.
  • Actively contribute to broader communicable disease surveillance, prevention and control strategies including building and maintaining relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • This role may require regular or ad hoc participation in a stand-by roster. Stand-by is a mechanism whereby employees are rostered to be available outside their ordinary hours of duty to attend to urgent or emergency work requirements.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of your work activities in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's records, information security and privacy policies and requirements.
  • Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for that of others in the workplace by working in accordance with legislative requirements and the department's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate how the actions and outcomes of this role and work unit impact clients and the department's ability to deliver, or facilitate the delivery of, effective support and services.
  • Provide supportive leadership and management of one or more team members in accordance with departments values when leading a team.
