The role of an Operating Theatre Assistant, at Townsville University Hospital, is to assist nursing, medical and surgical staff within the 14 Operating theatre complex and outline areas to ensure a safe and efficient work area.

The Townsville Hospital and Health Service provides a number of world-class services to the community.

Townsville University Hospital is the largest facility within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) geographic area. It operates a level 5-6 surgical intervention service to the North Queensland community.

The theatre complex comprises 14 operating theatres providing both elective and emergency theatre sessions

The role

Assist with the transfer of patients to and from the operating tables using appropriate equipment.
Assist with Perioperative antiseptic preparation, limb support and manipulation, irrigation fluids, and basic cardiac pulmonary resuscitation
Apply cast, splints and other appliances to patients as directed.
Cleaning of operating theatres and associated areas in accordance to the Queensland Health Guidelines and Infection Control Guidelines. This will include a 'high clean' of the theatre environment by the operating theatre assistant during core business hours.

Some roles within Queensland Health are designated as Vaccination Preventable Disease (VPD) risk roles. This is a VPD risk role. Health Care Workers in Queensland Health whose occupation poses a potential risk of exposure to blood or body fluids are required to provide evidence of vaccinations or proof that they are not susceptible (due to prior exposure to the disease and therefore have natural immunity) to the following VPD's Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and Pertussis (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis containing vaccine) according to the Queensland Health Policy.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key requirements, knowledge and experience which is outlined under 'The role'. The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following:

Demonstrated ability to perform the roles of an Operating Theatre Assistant.
Previous Manual Handling Experience in a Health Care setting.
Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to priorities work commitments and work autonomously in a rapidly changing work environment.
Excellent consultative, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
