Royal Hobart Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is Tasmania's largest hospital and the major referral centre. Providing acute, sub-acute, mental health, and aged care inpatient and ambulatory services to approximately 249 000 people in the southern Tasmanian region. The RHH is the second longest running institution in Tasmania and employs over 3,000 people.


You will play a pivotal role as the lead Orthoptist working independently and alongside Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmic nurses, and Allied health Assistants.

The successful candidate will provide a senior level orthoptic clinical assessment and treatment to out-patients and referred in-patients. Duties will include assessment of paediatric and adult strabismus, triaging paediatric referrals, visual field testing, biometry assessment, OCT imaging and patient screening.

The job will suit an Orthoptist with experience in paediatric and adult ocular motility. But also, a highly motivated Orthoptist looking to improve their ocular motility and strabismus knowledge and skills. Training and support will be provided prior to commencement for the right candidate.

Essential Requirements

Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor of Applied Science (Orthoptics) or equivalent and be registered with the Australian Orthoptic Board (AOB).

Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
