The Department

An exciting opportunity exists for a Grade 2 Occupational Therapist to join the dynamic acute Occupational Therapy department in the Vicotrian Adult Burns Service (VABS) at The Alfred Hospital.

The Victorian Adult Burns Service (VABS) at The Alfred is the state-wide provider of burns care for all adults with complex major burn injuries in Victoria as well as many people with less severe burns. We provide education and training for rural and regional clinicians involved in caring for burn-injured patients. We undertake research into the causes and mechanisms of burn injuries as well as evaluating emerging clinical treatment technologies.

Occupational Therapy provides a vital role within the VABS, working closely with Medical, Nursing and other Allied Health disciplines to provide the best care and outcomes for patients.

The Role

There are two aspects to this Grade 2 Occupational Therapist role. Primarily you will provide excellent person centred interventions related to the burn injury and will require strong communication and team work skills, and a collaborative approach to service delivery. Additionally, you will provide a flexible and responsive hand therapy service that meets each client’s identified therapeutic goals. Hand therapy services will be provided for, but not limited to, outpatient and inpatient care for plastics, orthopaedics, and burns patients.

The position is primarily responsible for the implementation of individual treatment and/or therapy programs, liaising with medical and nursing and advocating for patient centred care. This role will require autonomous treatment, and comprehensive skills across a spectrum of conditions under the guidance of the senior clinician.

You will work closely with and delegate tasks to Allied Health Assistants who support the occupational therapy service, and will also have the opportunity to work on quality projects and working parties as well as supervise students and to contribute to service development and planning.
