Your new company

A Local Municipality close to Melbourne CBD requires a Senior social Worker to join an expanding team within the Family Services Team of the Community Services Branch. The branch provides a range of services, programs and events that support independent living, community diversity, active participation and social inclusion, improving and implementing change in a range of community services to ensure quality outcomes for the City. The area is responsible for planning for and providing children's services, including child care, parenting services and family support activities, immunisation, maternal and child health services, services to people with disabilities and aged care services. The Branch works to ensure accessibility to all community members.


Your new role

As part of the Family Services Team, you will provide a range of individual and group services with families and children from 0 to 18 years, from various languages, cultural and socio-economic groups to strengthen families and improve circumstances for children. Your responsibilities will also include:


  • Provide case management and family work using a range of family interventions drawing on appropriate theoretical concepts and intervention skills.
  • Conduct family assessments and develop goal orientated Child and Family Action Plans identifying family strengths and challenges.
  • Identify where children's physical, emotional, educational, safety, stability and developmental wellbeing is at risk.
  • Assess the need for specialist referrals to address complex issues of family violence, mental health, social isolation, drug and alcohol dependency, legal issues, relationship issues and gambling.
  • Present relevant case details, observations and Child and Family Action Plans at regular supervision with the Co-ordinator Family Support and Counselling.

What you'll need to succeed

You will demonstrate an ability to articulate and demonstrate benefits of positive culture and values, as well as:


  • Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of and adhere to all legislative requirements pertaining to the position; The Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005, Children, Youth and Families Act, 2005 and Child Safe Standards.
  • Bachelor of Social Work recognised by AASW or qualifications such as Behavioural Science, Counselling , Psychology, Family Therapy, Community Social Service and with extensive relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of relevant theoretical frameworks for working with families, knowledge of child development and demonstrated skills in assessment, case management and a range of family intervention models.
  • Highly developed case work and case management skills and ability to manage a caseload of vulnerable families, children and adolescents with complex needs.
  • Demonstrated skills in supervision of staff and students.
