Where you'll be working

Westmead Hospital is the key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire local government areas and tertiary and quaternary services to greater western and metropolitan Sydney, rural New South Wales (NSW) and other states. The hospital has approximately 1,000 beds including acute overnight, day only and subacute. Services provided include infectious diseases, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, renal medicine, gastroenterology, respiratory and sleep medicine, cancer care, kidney and pancreas transplantation, obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G), neonatology, bone marrow transplantation, intensive care, trauma, critical care, aged care and rehabilitation, adult acute psychiatry (networked with the co- located Cumberland Hospital)

The Westmead Hospital ED operates 24 hours, 7 days per week. It is one of six major trauma centres in (NSW). ED presentation numbers are among the highest in NSW. Critical care services are provided by the Intensive Care Unit and the medical and surgical HDUs. Others providing a high dependency level of care within clinical specialty wards include the Coronary Care Unit, Renal and Pancreas Transplantation and Haematology.

Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of medicine and dentistry with many PhD and other postgraduate students supervised by Westmead Hospital scientists and clinicians. It is home to internationally recognised institutes of health research, the most prominent being the Westmead Millennium Institute. The Institute is one of the largest in Australia, conducting research into a wide range of disorders affecting adults and children, including infectious, immune, cancer, liver and metabolic diseases, leukaemia, eye and brain related disorders and heart and respiratory disorders.

Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital and Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals.

Auburn Hospital is a 165-bed acute care health facility on the eastern border of the WSLHD about 11 km from Westmead Hospital. Auburn Hospital provides services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Special Care Nursery, General Medicine and Cardiology. It also provides Outpatient Services, including Ante Natal Clinics, Dietetics Service and Surgical Services. The hospital has a Close Observation Unit. Auburn is affiliated with the University of Notre Dame as a teaching Hospital.

What you'll be doing

Delivery of medical care within the context of being the junior resident medical officer (RMO) or basic/ unaccredited physician trainee in a multi-disciplinary team. This position is rotational, with 4 different terms a year including ward based, community based, Emergency Department (ED), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and relief terms. In some ward based terms the appointee is a junior physician basic/ unaccredited trainee. In all terms, the senior resident medical officer (SRMO) will be under the supervision of a Consultant Admitting Medical Officer (AMO). Some teams will also have an unaccredited, basic or advanced trainee and/or Post-Graduate Fellow supervising.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Must have completed at least 2 Post Graduate Years in a Hospital with a minimum of 12 months experience working as a medical officer (not observer) in an Australian Public Hospital.
  3. Demonstrated recent relevant clinical experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
  4. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated teamwork, time management, organisational and problem solving skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.
