We seek committed gastroenterologists to join a thriving, expanding gastroenterology service in Melbourne’s South East.

Monash Gastroenterology is Victoria’s largest gastroenterology unit. The team currently comprises thirty three gastroenterologists, two ward teams (Clayton and Dandenong), 5 accredited and one non accredited registrars, three endoscopy units (Clayton, Dandenong and a newly built unit at Casey Hospital, Berwick) and a large clinical trials unit. We care for 2000 inpatients/year, provide approximately 6000 ambulatory endoscopic procedures, and see 15,000 outpatients per annum across a range of speciality clinics including general gastroenterology, liver, decompensated liver, liver tumour, endoscopy, hepatobiliary, and IBD, incorporating paediatric transitional and pregnancy IBD care. Fibroscan, intestinal ultrasound and an infusion services are provided.

Monash health has recently expanded services at our Casey Hospital site, including opening a new ICU, expansion of the emergency department, opening of a new ward tower, and creation of 6 new theatres, a new endoscopy suite and day surgery unit. The purpose built endoscopy suite with new Olympus equipment, and provation endoscopy reporting systems will provide patient centric, high quality endoscopy with a focus on cancer surveillance. In addition, a new gastroenterology consultation service to intensive care, ED, general medicine and surgery has been established. Casey Hospital is located in Kangan Drive, Berwick, approximately 24km from Clayton. Staff car parking is provided on site. Opportunities exist for collocated ambulatory care sessions and private practice nearby in an area of rapid population growth.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic clinician, with proven skills and experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and excellent consultative, teaching and communication skills. They will be expected perform general endoscopy on outpatients and inpatient referrals from ED, ICU and the wards. This will comprise gastroscopy, including GI bleeding interventions, and colonoscopy including polypectomy. They may participate in the on-call roster for urgent endoscopy at Dandenong and Clayton. Out of hours endoscopy is not performed at Casey. In addition they will be expected to provide a consultation service to intensive care, ED, general medicine and surgery. This service is supported by a full time non accredited registrar. The successful candidate will participate in unit educational activities, teaching and training of junior staff, clinical audit and support clinical research. Preference will be given to those candidates seeking a significant fractional appointment. Involvement in clinical gastroenterology services at Dandenong and Clayton sites can be negotiated for suitable candidates. These positions are appointed as a fixed term contract till January 2022.

Applications are invited from Registered Medical Practitioners who have completed advanced training in Gastroenterology, Fellowship of the RACP or equivalent, conjoint committee endoscopic accreditation, and membership of GESA.
