Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) is the major provider of specialist health services in the Gippsland region, east of Melbourne.  Our comprehensive range of services extends to emergency and intensive care, elective surgery, allied health, obstetrics, medical and radiation oncology at the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre, dialysis and aged care.


LRH has a number of outstanding facilities following a recent expansion. These include a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, large Emergency Department, endoscopy suites and modern and contemporary inpatient units. These complement extensive Allied Health amenities including a gym and pool. LRH is the regional provider of mental health services in Gippsland. LRH Mental Health Service operates an integrated specialist mental health program across the region and provides inpatient and community mental health care for adults, children and young people and older persons. Gippsland provides a fantastic regional lifestyle with easy access to Melbourne.


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and suitably qualified Person to join the Specialist and Therapeutic programteam at Latrobe Regional Hospital on a Full Time/parttime basis for up to 80 hours per fortnight.


Reporting to the Manager of the Specialist and Therapeutic Programs the successful applicant will play an important role in the provision of specialist clinical mental health advice to the Magistrates court, community correctional services and court users to ensure the appropiateness of mental health interventions and referrals for peope appearing before the courts


The successful applicant will be required to provide a responsive recovery oriented approach to Magistrates’ Court users including screening, assessment, provision of reports, advice, consultation and referral.


To be successful in this position you will need to display the following:



  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently undertake comprehensive mental health assessments, including writing concise reports with clear treatment recommendations.

  • Demonstrated experience in mental health including 5 years post registration in a relevant setting, with a preference for experience in forensic settings.

  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to function as an independent mental health practitioner.

  • An understanding of the legal system, court protocols and associated processes.

  • Knowledge of community resources available to support the mental health recovery of clients in the community or being released from custody into the community.

  • Ability to liaise and effectively communicate with a wide range of key stakeholders. This includes the ability to consult, liaise and negotiate with clients, carers, family members, members of the general community, members of the legal profession and other professionals. 

  • Well-developed computer skills and capability to utilise electronic record systems.

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and service context including the Mental Health Act 2014, Sentencing Act 1991, Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997 and the Criminal Justice System.
